Transmission & Distribution

NY Harbor Siphon

Buried infrastructure is a vital element of a water system that is often overlooked.  HMM has demonstrated strong expertise in the design of water transmission and distribution piping systems for more than 70 years.  We have analyzed simple and complex piping networks, evaluated pipeline failures, conducted route assessments, and designed hundreds of miles of new and replacement transmission and distribution pipelines for many water utilities. HMM’s analysis and design has also involved flow control and monitoring facilities including metering, pressure regulating, and surge protection systems.  We have also evaluated various pipeline rehabilitation techniques and designed improvements to extend the useful life of existing buried infrastructure.

At HMM, we utilize our world class tunneling and trenchless technology design capabilities to develop cost-effective solutions for challenging infrastructure problems.

Some of the HMM capabilities in the area of Water Transmission and Distribution include:

  • Route assessment
  • Water transmission and distribution system master plans
  • Hydraulic modeling and surge analysis
  • Detailed design
  • Pipeline materials selection
  • Trenchless technologies including tunneling, microtunneling and HDD
  • Interconnection design
  • Metering/PRV stations
  • Subaqueous crossings
  • Permitting
  • Pipeline rehabilitation
  • Asset planning
  • GIS integration
