Arlynn Bumanglag
Project Engineer
I am a project engineer in Hatch Mott MacDonald’s Gilroy, California office. In my position, I provide design support and assistance on various design projects that improve or enhance the safety of roadway conditions for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists, including roadway improvements, traffic signal design, construction and special event traffic control/management plans, pedestrian crosswalk improvements, and trail improvements.
My decision to pursue a career as an engineer was largely influenced by my father, who is a civil engineer. Seeing his passion for his career and following his successes inspired me to follow a similar career path. Working at Hatch Mott MacDonald has been very rewarding, and I enjoy learning the different aspects of designing a project and seeing all the details and the coordination that are involved. Prior to joining Hatch Mott MacDonald I worked for the local government, and I’ve found my prior experience very helpful as I’ve transitioned into working in the private sector. I have a much greater appreciation for the work involved in putting together the elements needed to construct a project, including plans, technical specifications, and cost-estimates.
My first project with the design team was a traffic signal design project for the City of Seaside. I enjoyed working on this particular project, which included upgrading existing signal equipment at ten intersections, because I was involved from the beginning stages through to the development of the final improvement plans, so it was a good learning experience for me. The tasks involved in this project, including site visits to inventory equipment, the preparation of base plans, and the development of the improvement plans, gave me a great opportunity to learn about the various aspects of traffic signal equipment as well as the effort required to fully develop improvement plans.
The team I work with has a good dynamic that creates an enjoyable work environment, and ultimately, a good finished product. My team collaborates very well, and we work jointly or independently, depending on the project, but are always ready to help one another. This teamwork and camaraderie extends into other elements of office life at Hatch Mott MacDonald. There are many staff members in the Gilroy office who have lunch together, which lets us get to know each other better in a relaxed environment.
