Gordon MacDonald

Practice Leader: Rail Systems - U.S.

Gordon MacDonald is Practice Leader for Rail Systems—U.S., for Hatch Mott MacDonald. With more than 35 years of experience honed on complex projects throughout North America, he is well-positioned to guide the growth of the rapidly expanding Rail Systems Practice.

Gordon’s experience includes the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of various light rail and heavy rail transit systems. He has extensive experience in rail systems design and construction management for both high speed and light rail systems, including overhead contact system (OCS); traction power; track; and signals and communications. He also has in-depth experience in systems integration between various systems and third parties, and the start-up and commissioning of light rail transit systems.

Most recently, he served as Systems Design Lead for the nine-year, $1.7-billion Crenshaw Light Rail (LRT) Project in California, which will extend light rail transit service into the busy Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor, improving mobility and enhancing the public transit network by adding connections to new and existing LRT lines. In addition, he recently served as the Traction Power System Design Manager for the Calgary West LRT Project—a $1.2-billion project to extend Calgary’s C Train LRT system.

Gordon is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) Overhead Contact Systems Subcommittee for Rail Transit and the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).
