Practice Leader: Transportation Planning - Canada

John McGill, PEng, PTOE, is HMM’s Transportation Planning Practice Leader for Canada. His 31 years of experience in transportation and traffic engineering in both the public and private sector provide him with a wide perspective on issues and current approaches to transportation planning and engineering. His balance of private and public sector experience provides him with a good understanding of his clients’ needs.

John’s extensive experience includes managing or directing multidisciplinary teams to meet time and budget constraints and quality goals on major and complex transportation projects involving Transportation Master Plan studies, Environmental Assessments, and traffic and corridor operational studies. He is also a recognized leader in the area of transportation safety, having introduced advanced techniques such as safety audits and network screening in Canada. He has managed some very complex and controversial assignments for key government agencies including the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario (MTO), Transport Canada, and the Federal Highways Administration (FHWA). He also has significant experience working with local and regional government agencies to assist with the delivery of infrastructure programs in areas such as transportation planning, traffic operations, roadway design, as well as research work and policy development.

John is active among the professional community, serving as the Chair of the Consulting Engineers of Ontario’s (CEO) Liaison Committee as well as maintaining memberships in several other organizations. He achieved his Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) credentials through the Transportation Professional Certification Board and has also been recognized for his work in the industry by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) as a co-author of its Professional Engineers Providing Services in Transportation and Traffic Engineering Guidelines. He has a long-standing involvement with the Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers (CITE) and was the 2010 recipient of its most prestigious honor, the H. Robert Burton Distinguished Service Award.
