Practice Leader: Rail & Transit - Canada

Nathan Higgins, PEng, PE, is a Senior Vice President and the Rail and Transit Practice Leader for Hatch Mott MacDonald’s Canada Business Unit. He is responsible for the streamlined operations of the Rail and Transit Practice across Canada, including delivering high-quality rail and transit projects and mobilizing efficient and effective project teams to meet client needs.

Nathan has extensive North American experience in the planning, survey, design, inspection, and construction of transportation projects. With more than 23 years of experience, he has developed specialty expertise in the detailed design and procurement of special trackwork and track fastening systems for ballasted and non-ballasted track systems. His demonstrated skills include project implementation, team building, and multiple-agency coordination. He is also experienced in program controls for budget, schedule, and in the design, construction, and commissioning of freight railways, commuter rail, light rail, and high-speed railway systems.

Nathan has led major transit programs and administered numerous multi-discipline design and construction projects. Most recently, he served as Project Manager for the City of Calgary’s West LRT Project.

Nathan is a licensed professional engineer, has been trained in Railway Bridge Inspection, and completed the Leadership Process Management Training Course at Ashridge Business College in Berkhansted, UK. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, the Permanent Way Institution UK, and a member and former committee chairman of the High-Speed Rail Systems Committee of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA).
