Regional Practice Leader: Highways & Bridges - Canada

Philip Murray, MEng, PEng, is Hatch Mott MacDonald’s Practice Leader Highways & Bridges—Canada. He draws on more than 17 years of experience to help guide the growth of the Highway & Bridges Practice in Canada, taking a proactive approach to risk management and maintaining a commitment to clients’ best interests.

Philip’s project experience spans North America, Guatemala, and Kazakhstan, and includes project management and oversight roles on projects involving roads, bridges, and rail systems, from design through inspection and construction. He has designed and managed diverse projects including planning studies, environmental assessments, new construction, and rehabilitation, and he is experienced in delivery projects by conventional and alternative delivery methods, including design-build and public-private partnerships (P3). His construction management experience includes a range of bridge types as well as the construction engineering of temporary works, falsework, formwork, and shoring. Most recently, Philip is serving as Engineering Team Project Manager on the Windsor-Essex Parkway, a $1.6-billion, public-private partnership project to design the highway component of the approach to a new Detroit River International Crossing between the U.S. and Canada – one of Canada’s largest infrastructure projects to date. This project includes 24 bridge and tunnel structures in addition to more than 75 lane miles of new highway, a roundabout, and three interchanges.

Philip has authored several papers for professional conferences, including the International Bridge Conference and the Concrete Bridge Conference. In addition, he recently received 1st place in Hatch Mott MacDonald’s Best Paper Award competition for a paper he coauthored with colleague Biljana Rajlic entitled “The Eagle River Bridge Superstructure Replacement.” He presented this paper at the 2010 Canadian Society for Civil Engineering—Short and Medium Span Bridge Conference.
