Civil Engineer
As a civil engineer in the Environmental Division at Hatch Mott MacDonald with a background in geotechnics, I have experienced first-hand the company’s interest in helping its employees develop their careers and interests to the fullest extent possible.
The company has supported my efforts to network, campaign, and build my own experience as well as the company’s offerings.
The team at Hatch Mott MacDonald includes a vast diversity of cultural, educational, and social backgrounds, which creates a dynamic environment in which my team and I have been able to develop unique solutions to even the most complex projects. My problem-solving skills were put to the test when I was able to travel with a team of Hatch Mott MacDonald employees to Port –au-Prince, Haiti, following the devastating January 2010 earthquake.
Through our Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, the company teamed with a non-profit organization to provide humanitarian relief to Port-au-Prince by offering versatile consulting engineering services. Following the earthquake, more than one million Haitians lived in temporary shelters, and sewage from the shelters was collected and dumped at a local landfill without any treatment. This practice created unsafe and unsanitary conditions in Port-au-Prince, threatened the water supply, and increased the risk of spreading pathogenic diseases such as cholera and dysentery.
As a result of Hatch Mott MacDonald’s generous donation of the time and services of myself and my teammates, we were able to travel to Haiti and develop a low-technology, emergency response wastewater and sewage containment and treatment system for the entire city of Port-au-Prince, helping to increase safety and stop the spread of disease in the disaster-torn city. Working with this diverse group has helped me to realize that successful solutions aren’t always about expensive and intricate technology, but are those that are innovative, simple, and cost-effective.
In addition to providing me the opportunity to grow in my professional development in the office and abroad, Hatch Mott MacDonald also fosters continuing education, and with the company’s help, I am pursuing a Master of Science in Civil Engineering and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Civil Engineering. My managers and fellow staff here have continually supported my pursuit of higher education and have been helpful with mentoring and scheduling throughout the program.
While studying takes up much of my free time, I also enjoy outdoor activities, fitness, and ice hockey. Since the engineer in me can’t pass up a mechanical challenge, I also enjoy working on cars and motorcycles, and I am restoring a 1987 Porsche 944 with a friend.
