Project consisted of dredging approximately 350,000 cubic yd of sand from a developed and approved borrow zone sited in the Townsend Inlet Ebb Tide shoal in order to maintain the navigational channel connecting the back bay to the Atlantic Ocean. The sand was recycled to the adjacent chronically eroded down drift beach through means of hydraulic dredging and a submerged conveyance line utilized to pump the sand onto the eroded beaches to restore the beach and dune system to pre-erosion conditions.

Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) was retained to design beach renourishment project.  HMM’s scope of services included:

  • Permitting services: USACE; USF&WS;NJDEP LURP
  • Design of dune and beach template
  • Preparation of plans and specifications
  • Advertisement of project for public bidding
  • Report on bids and recommendation of award
  • Construction engineering services

This large scale dredging project required the utilization of dredge capable of operating in ocean conditions. The project was completed on an expedited basis, and within an extremely short time window, due to seasonal environmental time constraints.
