Hatch Mott MacDonald provided professional consulting services for South Jersey Gas on a project to replace an existing steel pipeline and upgrade the Burleigh Regulator Station. The project consisted of 19,000 feet of 16 inch steel pipeline extending from Cape May Court House to Burleigh in Cape May County New Jersey.

HMM worked with SJG to review three potential routes for the replacement pipeline. The project included route selection, survey, base mapping, pipeline design, and environmental permitting.  The project was in a sensitive area that requires a Coastal Area Facility Review Act (CAFRA) permit.  The project also entailed site selection for a replacement regulator station and site plans for the station.

Project Highlights:

  • HMM took new high resolution aerial photographs
  • The selected route made use of existing street right-of-way
  • The selected route crossed a New Jersey Transit railroad branch; the crossing was done by jack and bore
  • HMM contacted all local utilities and transferred their lines to the base map
  • HMM surveyed the route with all visible pipeline features and other selected features located
  • HMM collected sewer invert elevations
  • HMM performed field locations on selected areas that had multiple utilities to confirm utility locations
  • HMM also completed an environmental study and marked and surveyed features required for environmental permits where necessary
  • HMM obtained CAFRA environmental and railroad crossing permits
  • HMM evaluated various sites for an upgraded Burleigh regulator and prepared a site plan for submission to the Middle Township planning board
  • HMM prepared construction and permit drawing sets
  • HMM provided a design that was fully compliant with the CAFRA regulations and minimized environmental impacts
