Elizabethtown Gas retained Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) to provide professional consulting services on a project to replace 41,000’ of existing 10 in and 12 in cast iron pipeline at various locations in Union County, New Jersey with 12 in steel main. The project included county parcel data acquisition, survey, base mapping, design, and traffic control plans.
HMM’s responsibilities included working with Elizabethtown Gas to generate preliminary base maps. In order to make route selection efficient, HMM performed base mapping using county parcel data and utility data supplemented with a survey of the sites. In addition, HMM contacted local utilities and their existing facilities were transferred to the base mapping. HMM then surveyed the route with all visible pipeline features and other selected features. Wetland and other environmental areas were marked and surveyed where necessary. Sewer invert elevations were also collected.
Since the survey area is located in an urban area, HMM coordinated with the local police department and performed some survey work at night, as necessary. The selected route made use of existing street right of way. HMM generated Traffic Control plans after assessing various sites and consulting with the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and local authorities where appropriate. The selected route crossed a major NJDOT state highway Routes 1 & 9.
HMM provided design and traffic control plans that were compliant with New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and NJDOT regulations and minimized environmental impacts and traffic congestion.
