The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) retained Hatch Mott MacDonald to develop a Tunnel Information Management System (TIMS) to collect and manage construction management (CM) and inspection data for four soft ground tunnels beneath Queens’ Sunnyside Yards, developed as part of MTA’s East Side Access Project. HMM worked closely with the client to develop a flexible, easily customized TIMS for soft ground tunnels.

HMM developed a remote and secure data entry application on HP net books allowing the Shift Inspector to do remote data entry followed by an upload function to add IRs onto an online application for Supervisor approval, via CITRIX.  Individual inspector net books IRs are stored in XML format and all IR uploaded are stored on an Oracle database.

Project Highlights:

  • The TIMS the collection of shift data including but not limited to contractor activities, high level ring production detail, and labor and equipment counts
  • The TIMS includes a Shift Summary Report and a subset of TIMS reports for assessing TBM Progress, Availability, and Utilization
  • Key project challenges included special Citrix default print and MTA internet proxy settings to meet COM and end user expectations
