The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DCWASA) retained Hatch Mott MacDonald to perform an Environmental Assessment analyzing the impacts of the proposed slope repair, stabilization, and environmental restoration of the reservoir embankment, and the transfer of jurisdiction at the Fort Stanton Reservoir located at Fort Stanton Park, Washington, D.C. HMM assessed the impacts of the proposed alternatives in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Additionally, HMM designed development and construction documentation to assist in the vegetative stabilization and restoration of the slope failure.

Working in conjunction with DCWASA and the National Park Service (NPS), HMM was able to create an Environmental Assessment which analyzed existing environmental conditions in the areas potentially affected, as well as the transfer of the jurisdiction from NPS to DCWASA. The jurisdictional transfer included the assignment of responsibilities and management services of the reservoir area to DCWASA without a change in ownership from the NPS.  HMM was able to develop a program to restore the 0.5 acres of slope failure, while also providing a long-term solution to this problem. HMM’s solution does not produce any negative environmental impacts; the vegetative stabilization design portion of the project promotes sustainability by using native vegetation, rather than man-made structures, to restore and stabilize the failed slope.
