The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) retained Hatch Mott MacDonald to provide a turn-key services contract for the preparation of contracts for interstate design and bridge replacements for the I-20 at Savannah River Project.  HMM was responsible for Concept Development and VE Study participation. The project, located at the Georgia/South Carolina boarder, provides 1.76 mi of interstate widening and the replacement of two bridge structures.

The project connects into the previously constructed highway in Richmond County, GA. The first bridge site is over the Augusta Canal and the bridges there were widened in-kind.  The second bridge site is over the Savannah River and the bridges there were replaced with a single structure. The widening ended in South Carolina just west of SC 230/Martintown Road, less than a mile from the border in Aiken County.   Minor modifications were made to the ramps at the Georgia Welcome Center, the entrance and exit of the South Carolina Welcome Center, and on the east and west sides of the SC 230/Martintown Road interchange.

Project Highlights:

  • Complex coordination with Georgia Department of Transportation, South Carolina Department of Transportation, and FHWA
  • Process and design were in accordance with GDOT’s Plan Development Process (PDP)
