As the Design-Build contractor on the Sea-to-Sky Highway Highway Improvement Project, Peter Kiewet Sons Co., retained Hatch Mott MacDonald to provide design services for the Stawamus Chief Pedestrian Overpass. The overpass is a 38 mi crossing over the upgraded Sea-to-Sky Highway, located at the entrance to the Stawamus Chief Provincial Park. The footbridge was designed as a gateway structure to the town of Squamish, the park, and as a symbol of the 2010 Olympic legacy. Its elegant form is harmonious with the site and utilizes two unbraced splayed arches and a vertically curved deck to carry pedestrians between the natural rock outcrops on either side of the highway.

HMM had overall responsibility as the Designer to the Design-Build Contractor for the management of all design work included within the $500 million contract for detailed design of specific section of the project. For the Stawamus Chief Pedestrian Overpass, HMM developed the bridge concept/configuration and carried out the detailed design.

Project Highlights:

  • Aesthetic design in steel and concrete
  • Economical solution that focuses on constructability

  • Tie-beams connect arches under deck at each end
  • Floor-beams connect with hangers in arch planes

  • Gateway structure for 2010 Winter Olympic Games
