Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) was retained by the Joint Venture Team of American Water and Pridesa American Corp. (AWP) to assist in the design-build modifications to the Tampa Bay Seawater Desalination Facility. AWP has a long-term contract with Tampa Bay Water for the operation and maintenance of the 25 MGD facility.

As Engineer of Record on the project, HMM worked with AWP to lead the design of the facility. HMM was responsible for structural, architectural, electrical, mechanical and site related design of the planned modifications. In addition, HMM reviewed the AWP pilot testing and process design for the project and FDEP permit applications. HMM provided engineering oversight during the construction phase of the project.

Project Highlights:

  • New chemical storage and feed facilities
  • New pretreatment facilities consisting of raw water screening, two stage flocculation sedimentation and residuals pumping/removal
  • Modifications to the existing sand filtration system
  • New diatomaceous earth precoat filtration facilities
  • Modifications to the RO system and membrane replacement
  • New residuals treatment facilities
  • Modifications to high pressure and product water pumps
  • Upgrading of post treatment lime and CO2 treatment systems
  • Instrumentation and controls improvements
  • Power system improvements for all new facilities and new stand-by power for select facilities
