The Vancouver Airport Authority (YVRAA) retained Hatch Mott MacDonald for the design and full-time construction services of its YVR Pier C Expansion project, which included the apron configuration and airside facilities associated with the expansion of Pier C. The project involved relocating Taxiway J to the west and transforming it into a new Code E apron taxilane to provide room for the Pier C terminal and apron stand expansion.  The additional gates can service up to nine aircraft, increasing the amount of passengers YVR’s domestic terminal can accommodate – all in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics.  A large portion of the recycled materials used to construct the new pavement structure came from crushed taxiway and apron pavements that were demolished. Project highlights included:

  • Demolition of existing taxiway and apron pavements for reuse as crushed granular base for aircraft pavement areas
  • Intricate drainage system capable of collecting surface water runoff near aircraft fuelling areas and isolating any spilled oil through the use of oil/water separators
  • Installation of aircraft fuelling utilities within the Apron VI pavement in order to minimize fuel truck hauling and its associated carbon footprint
  • Relocation of Taxiway J to the west to accommodate the Apron VI expansion to the east
  • Addition of 667,000 sqft of new rigid and flexible pavement to facilitate up to nine additional domestic gates for the 2010 Olympic games
